Mattress Size Guide for Indian Beds

A mattress that is even two inches off will hang over the frame or leave a gap you notice every night. Sleep America mattresses are sold by bed type and by the actual inch size, because Indian beds are not one standard length.

Widths we sell

  • Single, 36 inches wide. One sleeper. Suits a single bed or a compact guest room.
  • Double, 48 inches wide. Two people who do not mind sharing space, or one person who wants room to turn.
  • Queen, 60 inches wide. The usual choice for a couple. Each person has more shoulder room than on a double.
  • King, 72 inches wide. The widest size we make. Check the room as well as the frame, so you can still walk around the bed.

Lengths we sell

Most models come in three lengths: 72, 75 and 78 inches. A 72-inch mattress fits many older Indian beds. A 75-inch mattress is the common modern length. A 78-inch mattress is for taller sleepers and longer frames. If you are over about six feet, start with 78 inches so your feet are not on the edge.

How to measure

  1. Measure the inside of the bed frame, length and width, in inches.
  2. Order that size. Do not copy an old mattress if it was already overhanging.
  3. Do not add extra inches “to be safe”. A mattress wider than the frame will not sit flat.
  4. Check thickness. Depending on the model, heights are often 6, 7 or 8 inches. A thicker mattress can make a low headboard feel shorter.

Once you know the size, choose a build: latex, memory foam, pocketed spring, orthopedic, or the full mattress range.
